Cool Spots are one of the solutions to deal with the extreme heat in cities. Misting technology is highly efficient to cool urban spots, especially in combination with green zones and natural shadows. Recent European research projects AQUASAAL is are part of, show, that there are many creative ideas to integrate additional value for the population in such cooling zones.
The modern AQUASAAL technology minimizes water and energy consumption as the water is purified and reused. Due to special nozzles low-energy pumps can also be used, which can be supported by local PV systems. US Partner engineers will bring to you the experience of many successful European projects.
The principle of the system is based on a temperature reduction of an airstream by the evaporation of water in combination with elevated air speed. High pressure nozzles create water particles at micrometer scale which are accelerated by an airstream, either natural or created by an axial fan. Due to the small size of the particles they are evaporated immediately and cool down the airstream due to the evaporation process.
The created air stream is perceived as pleasantly cool and can therefore be used in hot and humid climates to improve the comfort for humans in outdoor areas. People exposed to the cooled airstream perceive the airstream as cold and dry breeze as the evaporation process is finished before the airstream reaches a person. Compared to conventional misting systems people or objects exposed to the airstream do not get wet nor perceive the added moisture.
To achieve a finished evaporation process and hence best system performance of the system the number of nozzles and the air flowrate need to be adapted to the local climate. Typical applications are plaza, parks, playgrounds, courtyard as well as e.g. restaurant terraces in outdoor areas.
